Sikh practices
Antam Sanskar. Kirtan. Langar.
Sikh funeral rites (Antam Sanskar) focus on accepting God's will, celebrating the soul's return to the Creator, and community support for the family.
Key practices
- Cremation — the standard practice; ashes are scattered in flowing water
- Washing and dressing — family washes the body and dresses it in the five articles of faith (the 5 Ks)
- Kirtan — hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib are recited
- Langar — community meals are provided to the bereaved family
- Akhand Path — continuous reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, often over 48 hours
- Bhog ceremony — marks the end of the mourning period
