Text messages to send

Copy-paste messages for when you can't face a phone call.

There is no wrong way to tell people. If a text is all you can manage, that is enough.

To close friends and family

Short and direct:

“I wanted to let you know that [name] passed away [this morning/last night/today]. I'm not up for calls right now but I'll be in touch when I can. x”

Tap to select.

With more detail:

“I have some really sad news. [Name] died [this morning/yesterday/on date]. It was [peaceful/sudden/after a long illness]. I'm with family right now. I'll call when I'm ready but wanted you to know. Love to you.”

Tap to select.

To acquaintances and wider circle

Brief and factual:

“Hello, I'm writing to let you know that [name] passed away on [date]. Funeral details will follow when we have them. Thank you for your understanding.”

Tap to select.

Asking someone to help spread the word

Delegate if you can:

“I need a favour. [Name] died [today/yesterday]. I can't face telling everyone right now. Would you be able to let [the tennis group/the school parents/your side of the family] know? I'd really appreciate it.”

Tap to select.

It is okay to ask for help. Most people are grateful to be given something concrete they can do.

To the school or daycare

Email or message:

“Dear [teacher/principal], I'm writing to let you know that [child's name]'s [grandparent/parent/relative], [deceased name], passed away on [date]. [Child] may be unsettled for a while and I wanted you to be aware. Please let me know if you notice anything that concerns you. Thank you for your support.”

Tap to select.
